Please note that the DNA cousin test is not as powerful as a DNA paternity test/parentage test and it is not as powerful as a DNA sibling test. If the alleged parent(s) in question is/are available for testing, we highly recommend the paternity test or maternity test over the DNA cousin test. If the parents of the alleged cousins are available to take the sibling test, the sibling test would be recommended over the cousin test since the sibling test (although not as powerful as a parentage test) is more powerful than a cousin test. The cousin test should only be considered if absolutely no other test type can be taken as it is the least powerful of all of the available kinship tests. While the DNA paternity and maternity tests will always provide absolutely conclusive results, the DNA cousin test will provide a likelihood that the individuals are cousins versus not related at all.

Legal DNA Cousin Test Option

The Legal DNA Cousin Test is for individuals who need to receive legally admissible documents for use in court. Legal DNA Cousin testing requires a chain-of-custody procedure to be followed during sample collection by an unbiased third party collector/collection site. If you choose the legal test, you cannot collect the samples yourself. You will need to attend an appointment for chain-of-custody sample collection. This ensures proper witnessing, verification of identification and fingerprinting of the individuals involved in the test. Results will be available 3 to 5 business days from the date the samples are received at the laboratory.

If the individuals to be tested live in different cities, or even different countries, we can split the kit and send each component to a different address. Since the kits are individually barcoded, the samples will still be tested together even if the are sent back separately. To order a split kit, please write the following into the comments box of the online order form “Please split kit”. Please also indicate the name and address to send each component. For example, please state “send one of the cousin’s portion to… (specify one of the cousin’s name and address)” and “send the other cousin’s portion to… (specify the other cousin’s name and address).
